Women and the academic world

Posted on June 28, 2011 |

wpid women science Women and the academic worldIn recent decades women have been playing an increasingly important role in scientific research. However, according to “Keeping Women in the science Pipeline”, a recent study from the University of California, Berkeley, researchers have found that while more than 50% of the doctorates granted are for women, seems to be that they are more likely to leave the profession than her male counterpart. This, combined with a growing demand for professionals with talent in Europe and Asia, endangering the first site of the United States in regards to science.

The authors of this study collected information from multiple sources and surveys conducted in 62 academic institutions, where they found considerable differences between men and women with regards to the academic high-value jobs. For example, women with small children are 35% less willing to accept an academic position of full-time than men, after receiving a doctorate in Sciences.

Moreover, women married with children are 27% less willing than men to receive an academic post. On the other hand, single women without children are as successful as the married men with children in what it refers to accept academic posts of importance (full time).

According to the report, both men and women see above academic positions than other jobs more suited to family life, i.e., that face the responsibilities of these positions, the family is relegated with less interest.  In fact, only 46 per cent of males and 29 per cent of the women described as “something” or “very” friendly with the family, to academic institutions. Many hours of work and motherhood were the most cited problems.

The academic world needs policies more in line with the familiar world of own scholars as well as giving women more opportunities for the positions of importance in the academic world.  The report concludes with: “American researchers do not receive adequate benefits in terms of their families”, and added: “The Academy needs to be more flexible [...]” “Research in the universities need to see towards the construction of a more user-friendly environment from a package of policies and benefits”.

IBM predictions for 2015

Posted on June 28, 2011 |

wpid ibm technology 300x201 IBM predictions for 2015IBM last March, revealed in their fifth annual Conference “Next five in five”, a list of technological innovations which the company says, has the potential to change how people work, play and live within the next five years. Here are his predictions:

Three-dimensional interfaces will allow people to interact via hologram. To the extent that the three dimensions and the holographic cameras are more sophisticated and can miniaturize to fit into mobile phones, users can interact with photos, browse the Web and chat in ways simply impossible before today.

Scientific advances in transistors and battery technology will allow mobile devices to have a lifespan of 10 times more than the times current battery use. Instead of heavy batteries of lithium-ion, scientists are working with batteries that use air, Yes, air, to react with denser metals.

Sensors in phones, cars and other objects, will capture information and data to give scientists a real picture of the environment. IBM recently patented a technique that allows systems to drive analysis once occurred events, for example, an earthquake, as well as the possibility of giving warnings of tsunamis in advance.

Analytical technology can give personalized recommendations to to move from one side to another in the shortest possible time. Using new mathematical models and predictive analysis of IBM, researchers can analyze and combine multiple possible scenarios that could give with the best route for daily trips that human beings do, for example, to their work.

Innovations in computing centers will allow the excessive heat and energy that is wasted, used to heat buildings in the winter and cool in the summer. With new technologies, such as system on a chip cooling, the thermal energy of the processors may be recycled efficiently to provide hot water to homes and offices.

These predictions for 2015 are based on technologies that are emerging from the laboratories of IBM, as well as the analysis of markets and social trends.

For the connoisseur public: The Sitxy One

Posted on June 28, 2011 |

wpid thesixtyone For the connoisseur public: The Sitxy OneOn musical issues, the taste of the labels or radio stations are almost always puts commercial artist thrust or the effectiveness of the magic of pop in the 3 minutes of a song. But ultimately what really matters to an artist is if people like, and more than once some bands have become popular through the mouth to mouth, or “click click” of the Web. Not find a page to give credit to the listener, as it should be.

the sixty one is an interface where users can listen to music from new artists, the songs are provided by the labels or artists. While the song is playing, the window displays a large photograph of the interpreter and small boxes of text on the history of the musician appear randomly. If the user does not like what is listening, you can click an arrow and listen to what follows. If it is to your liking, you can, or you must click a heart as a sign of approval.

The best of this site is probably that account with a score by each user heart species receives points. If this band is doing well, the user will receive special points. Of course you have to register, but the good news is that you can do with Facebook Connect. You must provide an email and a username, but the process is very simple.

The interface has a comments section, and offers extra information and images as well as the downloading of songs. It is good to listen to new music while you work, is free and also encourages listening to little-known artists. The design is remarkable and the navigation smooth and simple. I simply loved this site. Hopefully more Latin American artists discover you and publish their songs there. Vísitalo and tell us what you think.

wpid post4 Booed!

Not everything that comes from Cupertino is well received by fans.  From the famous case of the Mac Cube until recently removed MobileMe. Now, the criticism was the suite for Final Cut Pro X to save Meg, have removed video editing elementary functions, and the public has not been limited in criticism and bad opinions thereon.

Available via the App Store for Mac, Final Cut Pro X offers a redesign from scratch and improvements to the interface and speed. However, in an attempt to offer it at a competitive price, Apple left out functions as Import FCP images, there is no ability to edit multi-camera, it has no support for camera network, the inability to choose the features to export a video among many others.

Face of criticism, Apple has announced that (expensive) solutions exist to solve such problems and also have updates on the way to go to improve the functionality.

The program has a cost of $3,200 pesos and you can already find it for download. If your you are using and you are also unhappy with this new version, leave us your comments.  If not, also.
